This letter is in response to a recent article The Huntsville Times published opposing using green power sources. On the contrary, solar panels should be viewed as (a part of) a power plant. Right now solar power installation is at approximately $5 per watt which is competitive with coal and nuclear power! The cost of solar panels has plummeted over the past 10 years.
No one would object if we paid for a new coal or nuclear power plant if we needed the power and so in exactly the same way no one should object to giving away free solar panels to the people since you are merely purchasing a component of a new power plant that’s all. I won’t call them subsidies, they are just one component of a new electrical power plant purchase. Just think of it, no more coal slag ponds and no more uranium mining and no more electric bills.
Also the DOE has put in billions of dollars of research into electrical energy storage such as fuel cells, fly wheels, super capacitors, lithium hydride, etc. What someone needs to do now is make the choice of which type we will use to augment the solar panels in a typical roof top installation for night time power needs. Instead these many battery studies are just being filed away.
Solar energy is a national security issue, a patriotic duty. It is well known for example that our petrol dollars finance middle east regimes that finance those madras schools for teaching such fanaticism for example. We should have gone green decades ago.
