Public Service Company of New Mexico wants to build a 6.1-megawatt solar energy facility on an 80-acre site northwest of the intersection of Northern Blvd. and Encino Road, west of Rio Rancho.
Sandoval County Commission will consider a request from PNM at their meeting on Thursday for an amendment to change zoning for the site from Rio Rancho Estates Community District to Special Use.
The solar energy center, the first in Sandoval County, is one of three that PNM hopes to bring online this year. The other two locations are in Valencia County.
With the addition of the three facilities, PNM will have 67-megawatts of its own solar generation located at locations throughout New Mexico, PNM spokeswoman Susan Sponar said.
She said construction would create temporary jobs and result in an estimated $152,000 in new tax revenue for Sandoval County next year.
