FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21 Alive) — A plan to save and produce environmentally friendly energy at the Fort Wayne International Airport is in the works.
A letter of intent will be looked at and potentially be approved sometime in March to build a solar energy farm.
The solar farm would be built on two locations owned by the airport, one along Coverdale road and the other along Airport Expressway.
The farm would lie on 75 acres between both locations. Housing solar farms on airport grounds is not common and there are only 30 installations in 15 states.
The closest airport solar farm to our viewing area is Indianapolis. It houses more than 41,000 solar panels which is capable of powering more than 1,800 homes a year.
The company, Telamon, will determine if Allen County gets enough sunlight to create a similar solar farm here.
Approval will come from the FAA. In the past solar panels have had glare issues, but now there are new panels with a non glare panel that do not put pilots or the control tower workers in danger.
“We are doing this with the utmost safety in mind. At the end of the day we are an airport first, but if we have an opportunity to bring solar to the community we are looking forward to that,” FWA Executive Director Scott Hinderman said.
While this is still a plan in the making, the cost of this project will not come out of Fort Wayne International’s pocket.
