Town of Dickinson, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Even on cloudy Binghamton days, the Southern Tier Solar Works (STSW) said residents could produce enough solar energy to lower their energy bills to almost nothing.
STSW’s first community-wide solar initiative will be to use state and federal tax incentives to reduce the cost for homeowners in Broome and Tioga counties to go solar.
Southern Tier Solar Works is partnering with ETM Solar Works to install solar energy panels in homes.
The owner of ETM Solar Works said people will see reduced energy bills and sometimes no energy bill at all.
“There’s probably 20 or 30 percent of the customers that we have put systems in for who have a zero electric bill,” said Dr. Gay Canough, “And there’s even a few of them that generated enough extra that they were able to offset all of the cost of the basic service charge also.”
The team is inviting the public to workshops where they can sign up to be part of the program if they think its right for their home.
“At that point free site visits commence and we’ll see if your site is suitable for solar,” said Adam Flint of Cornell Cooperative Extension. “If it is suitable for solar then we get contracts going, look at financing, and we get the things up on people’s roofs.”
There will be 10 workshops around the Southern Tier with information on incentives, discounts, and types of solar panels this program can offer.
